Hiking can be an enjoyable and at times challenging hobby and is enjoyed by millions of people each year. It’s an activity that not only keeps you and your family healthy but also lets you spend some quality time together. Despite this there are some basic things to consider when hiking with kids.
Make it Entertaining
This is especially true if you have young children. They often become bored so distracting them with a game can be a good approach. If you know the route well then you could ask them to find certain landmarks or take along a ball for a quick game of football.
Carry Drinks and Snacks
Keep your kids hydrated by carrying a range of drinks and snacks. High energy snacks are useful if you are planning a long hike and it’s important to take regular breaks. In the summer you should keep a close eye on your kids to ensure that they are well hydrated. Healthy snack bars also come highly recommended.
Basic First Aid Previsions
Carry a basic first aid kit. As adults we can deal with minor injuries but kids are much more affected by them. Basic provisions such as plasters and creams are needed and an understanding of basic first aid is a plus. Also have a mobile phone with you so that you can call for help during an emergency.
Wear Proper Clothing
There’s nothing worse than being wet when walking so make sure you and your kids have the correct clothing. Having good, water tight walking boots is particularly important and you should aim to wear clothes that are in keeping with the current weather.
Many people like to keep a change of clothes with them. This can be useful if you are getting cold or a part of your body has become wet. Children feel this much more.
As with many things in life planning is crucial. If you are hiking a new route make sure you have some backup options in mind and think about your child’s hiking abilities rather than your own. The main thing is to have fun and if you have any tips of your own please feel free to share.
