The SteriPen was introduced by Miles Maiden, the founder of Hydro-Photon. Mr. Maiden, a devoted outdoors-man, believed there had to be a better way, to purify water in the wild, than with chemicals or filters. After years of research, he dedicated himself to developing a purification system by using ultraviolet technology. This is the same technology that is used in water treatment plants. He received his first patent in 1999 and has since followed with patents in 2001 and 2003.

There are three main classes of biological baddies: bacteria, viruses and protoza. The first two are easy to neutralize/kill by any purification system. The one draw back of this UV system is that it does not remove particles from the water. A simple solution to this is to use a practical two-step approach First filter suspect water through a piece of cloth or the SteriPen fits all filter, thereby removing any particles before using the UV purification system. Second use the SteriPen as directed and you will have safe drinking water in just seconds.
